When It Feels Like Time Stands Still

It started with a “yes” to something outside my comfort zone.

A year ago, I agreed to write a book for a series I was invited to join. Apocalyptic fiction. Definitely not my usual genre. At first, I did all the “right” things. Bought a project board. Wrote on index cards. Mapped out a timeline.

But every time I sat down to write, it felt like a chore. Like I had to squeeze the words out with brute force. I’d write for ten minutes, check the time, sigh, and walk away. It wasn’t flowing. It was draining.

Then something shifted.

I stopped trying to write the way everyone else was. I stopped pushing. I asked a better question: “How can I make this more me?”

And suddenly, the words started coming. I started dreaming about my characters. Waking up with new plot twists. Sitting down for hours and forgetting to eat. It wasn’t a task anymore. It was an inspired compulsion. One that felt alive.

That’s the difference between checking off a task and following inspired action.

When we move from alignment instead of obligation, time expands. Creativity rushes in. Ideas pour out without resistance. We find joy again in something that used to feel heavy.

This book might not turn out like the others in the series. And that’s okay. Because it finally feels like mine. Not in the way it follows the rules, but in the way it makes me come alive.

So if there’s something you’ve been putting off, dreading, or pushing through, ask yourself: What would this look like if I stopped forcing and started flowing?

Sometimes, all it takes is changing how you approach the work to fall in love with it again.

3 Quotes to Ponder:

  1. "Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive and go do that." Howard Thurman

  2. "Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working." Pablo Picasso

  3. "Flow is not about control. It is about letting go." Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

2 Thought Experiments:

  1. What is one project or goal you’ve been avoiding because it feels like a “have to”? What would happen if you treated it like an invitation instead of an obligation?

  2. If your inner wisdom whispered, “This would be so fun if you did it your way,” what would your way actually look like?

1 Action Step (Journal Prompt):

Think of a time when you were completely absorbed in something you loved, when time disappeared. Now contrast that with a task you forced yourself through.

How did your body, energy, and focus differ in those two states? What does that tell you about how you want to approach your goals moving forward?

Warmly,

Vickie Poole
